At Longshaw Nursery School we have chosen six ‘core books’ which we want our children to know well by the time they leave nursery. Throughout your child's time at nursery we will re-visit these books again and again. We will be using these books to develop children's language acquisition, supporting language development and increasing children's vocabulary through looking at and talking about the pictures. 

We are passionate about children developing a real love of books and through our core texts, children will remember the story, characters and narrative and be able to re-tell them independently. 

 Our children will learn the books word for word after a while, which will support their journey into early reading and develop their fluency. 

Our Core Books are:

• Goat goes to playgroup
• The very hungry caterpillar
• You choose
• Jaspers Beanstalk
• We're going on a bear hunt

We also have ‘core rhymes’ which support language development. By the time the children leave nursery they are familiar with each core rhyme.

In our 2/3 room parents are invited for 'rhyme time' this allows them to also learn the rhymes and share with their child at home.
