Promoting British Values

 

At Longshaw Community Infant School we constantly promote our ‘shared values’ within school. These may be referred to as ‘British Values’ and are in line with the Governments values as set out in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. These values are promoted and reinforced through regular teaching sessions as set out below.

DEMOCRACY

Longshaw strongly promotes ‘pupil voice’ and believes that our children should be actively involved within our school and their learning. Our school council meet weekly with Mrs Batley and address the issues concerning them around school. Pupil’s interests are taken into account when monitoring topics and teachers involve their pupils on specific aspects within the classroom such as role play ideas, chosen story for the end of the day etc.

THE RULE OF LAW

All children will encounter rules and laws throughout their daily life and will be expected to follow these. Therefore, we feel it is important for pupils to understand the reasoning behind having these rules and laws in place. At Longshaw we promote the golden rules and these are shared with the children and displayed through school. The following of these rules is promoted during our celebration assemblies each week.

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

Through promoting a positive culture within our school we create a safe environment which enables pupils to make choices. Our e-safety teaching gives the children the knowledge and confidence to understand their personal freedoms and exercise these safely.

MUTUAL RESPECT

One of our core values is mutual respect – this is clearly shown in our school in the way in which adults and children interact with each other. Children learn how their behaviours affect others and the impact it has upon themselves.

TOLERANCE OF THOSE WITH DIFFERENT FAITHS OR BELIEFS

We strongly believe that tolerance of others is achieved through knowledge and understanding. At Longshaw we promote this through observing significant events in various religions and cultures. We visit different places of worship to gain a greater understanding of faiths and customs. Through our daily school life we are empathic towards others and demonstrate tolerance to create citizens who will contribute towards a better Britain for the future.

Mutual Respect and the Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs 

Respect is a fundamental school value, which is promoted consistently through school. We pay explicit attention to this as part of our RE, PHSE, and SMSC curriculum. Respect is a school value that is discussed deeply, starting with self-respect and covering respect for family, friends, and other groups; the world and its people; and the environment including people of different faiths and beliefs.

Children can articulate why respect is important;  how they show respect to others and how they feel about it for themselves. Children’s behaviour demonstrates their good understanding of this value in action. Children are able to talk about the different faiths and cultures they learn about, ask questions and show tolerance and respect for others of different faiths and religions.

Democracy

The children at Longshaw Infants see democracy borne out in a whole variety of ways and see this as being an essential component of successful team working. Democracy is a school value that children meet when discussing respect and fairness.

The establishment of a new School Council each year models the democratic process. Class charters.  Learning Walks for behaviour and behaviour for learning School Values. Pupil voice.

 

Children are able to work cooperatively in pairs and groups as well as in whole class situations. They understand about turn taking and respecting the views of others. They contribute to school life.

Rule of Law

The children at Longshaw Infants are familiar with this concept through the philosophy that infuses the entire work of the school. They are familiar with the concept through the discussion of values and, in RE lessons, the idea that different religions have guiding principles.. Children are familiar with the local police who visit to talk to them informally.

Children are able to articulate how and why we need to behave in school and demonstrate they understand and can abide by these. They are able to discuss and debate with their peers and adults in relation to these.

Individual Liberty

Our Values based discussions and acts of worship begin with discussion about the self, e.g. self –respect and self-worth in relation to the individual value so that children see that they are important in their own right. The philosophy of our teaching and learning places emphasis on the right to have our own thoughts and evidence based views. Children are strongly encouraged to develop independence in learning and to think for themselves.

Children are able to show independence in learning and to think for themselves. Knowledge and confidence with E-Safety.

 

Children understand about the importance of accepting responsibility and of their right to be heard in school. They are consulted on many aspects of school life and demonstrate independence of thought and action.
